Here, you’ll benefit by gaining direct access to professional coaches who can answer specific questions, give you new ideas, and inspire you toward greater success. Connect and chat while sipping a glass of wine or a beer and sampling a variety of appetizers. Oh, you don’t want to miss being serenaded by the sounds of jazz piano performed by Glenn Taylor, our president-elect!

Need some networking tips? Try a few of these:

  1. Have a goal! Come up with two outcomes you’d like to get out of the event, such as meeting three new people or getting one new coaching tip. Knowing ahead of time what you desire to accomplish will help you stay focused—not aimlessly wandering around.

  2. Use our coaching competencies. Think about powerful questions and active listening. Think ahead of a few questions that you could ask to stimulate conversation, then LISTEN first then share your thoughts. Here’s a few to get you started:
  • What’s your coaching focus?
  • How did you get started in coaching?
  • What projects are you working on right now?
  • What trends have you noticed with your clients?
  1. Remember your business cards! This should go without saying; however, how many people have you heard say “I’ve forgotten my cards” or “I just gave away my last one!” Bring more business cards than you think you’ll need.

  2. Jot down notes on their business card. You probably won’t remember the important details of every conversation, so it can be helpful to write them down. After mingling with a few people, find a corner of the room to subtly make notes on the back of each person’s business card about who she is, what you talked about, and any follow-up you want to do.

  3. FOLLOW UP in the days after the event. You’ve invested time and energy into the attending the event, remember to cross the networking finish line! Send follow-up emails or requests to connect on LinkedIn to anyone you met with a personalized message by mentioning something you talked about or that you remember about them. This is where those notes come in handy! This is also the time to suggest any follow-up, for example, to ask your new coaching colleague to meet up for coffee or lunch.

Networking is one of the greatest tools you have to build your coaching business and personal brand, and by being prepared for the event, professional once you get there, and proactive with your follow-up, you can make sure you get the most out of it. Beyond that, just try to relax and have some fun!
